"set up microphone" dialog box no longer functions.
i have been using a usb microphone on my system successfully for a while. but now, the microphone no longer works and most importantly, the "setup microphone" dialog box in the speech recognition area of the control panel no longer functions. If i click setup microphone, the dialog box pops up as it should. and when I click "next" the dialog box where I am asked to read the message about dictating to my computer, the dialog box always spontanteously closes the second i start dictating with no message.now there are some very bizarre things about this.1) if i never say anything into the microphone the dialog box will stay up indefinitely without a crash. it only closes for no reason about 1 second after I start dictating.2) my dogs just taught me that the dialog box doesn't crash even if there is noise in the microphone. they barked loudly just now and the dialog box detected all there barking (the little green bar bouncing up and down) and it did not close. but when as soon as i said "peter dictates.." it spontaneously closed again.anyone have any idea why on earth it would do this? I have tried multiple USB microphones, and have tried microphones plugged in through the on-board mic port in both the back and front of the computer. ALL of them have the exact same behavior as I describe above. The dialog box "works" so long as i say anything OTHER than the text that the dialog box asks me to read into the computer. As soon as I start reading that...it closes with no message. To be more specific the box tells me to say "Peter dictates to his computer. He prefers it to typing, and particularly prefers it to pen and paper."If i start reading that, the window closes when I say "Peter". If I instead say: "blahblah blahblahs blah blah blahblahblah. ... etc." It does not crash, and acts as though I read the sentence just fine.

This issue can be caused by the driver of the USB microphones. I suggest you follow the steps below to reinstall the drivers. 1. Connect the microphone. 2. Click "Start", type in Device Manager the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary. 3. In Device Manager, find the entry of the microphone. Right-click and choose Uninstall. 4. Restart. If the issue persists, please open the log C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log, copy the last parts which should be the installation of your device form the log into your post.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I am having the same issue. It was all working just fine and suddenly, one day, it decided to act all stupid and now speech recognition wouldn't understand even simple words like "I" and "am". No matter what i say..it goes on with "What was that?". Note that everything was just fine a day before and it all messed after i had disconnected the microphone headset because i had to take my computer to the technician so that he could increase the RAM. When i brought the machine back; i reconnected the microphone and headsets EXACTLY like they were connected before into the same ports and made sure the microphone settings were EXACTLY like before. But it doesn't work. My microphone isn't USB so that wouldn't be the problem and just like Klintus pointed out, in the microphone setup dialog box as soon as i say Peter, it closes without any error. What the ____ is wrong?

I am ALSO having the same issue - microphone used to work but when I start to read the displayed sentence while configuring the microphone, the dialog box disappears... I cannot get any program to record my voice. This is maddening...catinhat27

Just try re-initiating everything. Plug in and plug out your microphone again and re-apply the settings. Mine started to work all by itself and i swear I hadn't changed anything! Anyways, its accuracy sucks anyway so I am on Dragon Naturally Speaking 11 now. It has very neat accuracy.
